Making a papier-mâché doll is an excellent activity for kids of all ages, and they have a brand new plaything when finished.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Scissors
Old newspapers
Masking tape
Papier-mâché paste
Fine sandpaper
Poster paint
Brushes
Clear varnish
Marker pen - to define features before varnish if necessary

1. CHILD Roll diagonally two sheets of newspaper together to form a thick 'rope'.
2. PARENT About 2 inches from the top, give the rope a slight twist to form the neck of the doll; secure the twist with masking tape. The top 2 inches will be the head.
3. PARENT Cut the remaining rope to the length you desire to form the doll's torso.
4. PARENT Wrap masking tape around the head and torso of the doll to add strength to its form.
5. CHILD Take four shorter lengths of newspaper and roll into tight ropes to form the arms and legs of the doll.

Wrap tape along the length of all (newspaper) 'rope' to hold its shape and cut the legs and arms to an appropriate length for the proportions of the doll.
7. PARENT Secure the legs and arms to the torso with masking tape. PARENT - follow the instructions on the packet for mixing papier-mâché.
8. CHILD Apply three to four layers of papier-mâché to entire surface of the doll.
9. CHILD Roll some papier-mâché between your thumb and index finger to form tight strips, and place the strips on the head of the doll for hair.
10. CHILD Cover with thin strips of newspaper. ALTERNATIVELY: glue on yarn for hair when doll is completely finished and varnished.
11. PARENT Let the doll dry overnight.

When the doll is completely dry, sand its surface lightly with fine sandpaper.
13. PARENT Apply two coats of primer to the doll.
14. CHILD Paint the doll with poster paints.
15. PARENT Seal the dry paint with two coats of clear varnish.
